In addition to learning a lot about typography the last two weeks, I have also learned a lot about colour theory.
As a Graphic designer it’s really important to know about colour theory – which is a theoretical understanding of colour.
I have learned a lot about how to make colour combinations by using colour systems and colour psychology.
However, one perfect formula doesn’t exist. How we see colours are highly subjective, based on our personal feelings, taste, coulture and opinions.
We can achieve a lot by:
- Considering the message of our design when choosing colour. Remember that every colour has a meaning and sends a message (colour psychology)
- Work with different colour formula. Monochromatic, Analogous, Complementary, Split Complementary, Triadic and Tetradic.
- Have knowledge about different colour systems, like: RGB (primary colours for digital media), CMYK (primary colours for printed media) and SPOT / PMS (pantone matching system for printed media, spot colours)
- Know about and work with the terms: Hue (colour), Saturation (Intensity of colour) and Value (lightness or darkness of colour)
- Know how to create a colour palette.
- Know about different colour generator resources like Coolors, Color Hunt, Color Claim, Color Supply, Adobe Color and Adobe Capture.
- Take inspiration from the world around you.
- Keep experimenting with colours.
To learn more about Adobe Color, Adobe Capture and how to create colour palettes/ swatches, I went through a course in LinkedIn Learning. In addition to that, I also learned how to use them in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

While working with the course I made different colour palettes, with a mysterious theme in mind:

I’m looking forward to using both Adobe Color and Adobe Capture a lot going forward with my briefs and assignments.
