MA02 – Using Ideation Techniques And Sketching

For this assignment I ended up with using two different ideation techniques, «Morphological analysis» and «Consequences».

I need to come up with ideas for my course assignment, where I am creating a new book cover for «The Seven Dials Mystery» by Agatha Christie.

As you can see in my morphological analysis I chose to work with the words: murder, mystery, seven, strong woman character, secrets, time and suspicious. They are all linked to the book.

My morphological analysis.
Combining two or three elements from the morphological analysis, to make new ideas for the book cover.

Out of my morphological analysis I got several ideas, but I selected three of them to focus on.

  • Idea #1: Lips whispering + 7 out of clocks (Gestalt principle) + bed full of blood. Then I removed the bed from the idea – because it didn’t fit. However, I took parts of the image further with my idea.
  • Idea #2: Man running away + bloody seven (Gestalt principle). In the process I added a «clock hoodie» on the man, like the secret club have on in the book.
  • Idea #3: Clocks in a row, the 8th clock are X’ed out + bloody seven (Gestalt principle)

Then I went on to use the «Consequences technique», to build further on my ideas.

Finally I started sketching.

Idea #1 «whispering lips» This might work better with black background. Have in mind that all off them are rough sketches and are eventually going to be made in Photoshop.
Idea #2 «Man running away with clock-hoodie». This one would also be more «mysterious» with black or misty background. Maybe more blood spatter.
Idea #3 «Clocks In A Row». I think that a dark background of some sort will make the cover look more mysterious. And all of my ideas would work with a dark background. The text of the cover here got a bit weird because I decided to make the background black after I wrote the text. I really like the Clocks in a row, though. And the one who are X’ed out.

After finishing my MA02, I now have several ideas to work with and I have delivered them on forum to get feedback. I think that will help a lot for me, in this process.

Best regards, CDH
