I just learned a LOT about ideation techniques and how to generate ideas in quantity and quality – sketching is a huge part of that and it is a key skill for all graphic designers.
Sketching is an essential part of developing ideas before making them digital.
Our brain works different when we are sketching. We think faster, wider, and we get more experimental because we are not constrained.
As a graphic designer, we do need the skill to sketch out our ideas – we are after all, visual communicators.
I am currently working on a bigger project where i’m making a new book cover for a book. In the process of redesigning this book cover – I do assignments to help with the ideation process.
This is a word stack method where you first write down several nouns, verbs and adjectives linked to a theme (in my case, the book I am working on)
Then you draw a card from each pile, form a phrase out of your noun, verb and adjective – then sketch it.

I got the words: woman mouth, light and bleeding.

Then I started to sketch out my words, and make them into something. They where supposed to be linked to the book cover, but I ended up with something really far from what I intended around the theme of the book. But, it gave me an idea actually for my book cover. Believe it or not.

This method could be fun to do with friends, and just write down as many nouns, verbs and adjectives we can come up with – and then sketch it out in a funny way. That will be my next game night suggestion!
Best regards, CDH
